Finally I caught the chance to see Memoirs of a Geisha and I did enjoy the
movie. It was not quite as bad as I thought it would be, from reading the
comments on the newspapers and from hearing about it elsewhere. I was not
bothered by the fact that the actors were not Japanese and the story is not
exactly accurate. It is a movie based on a novel which was written from a White
Male’s Perspective. It is not a documentary!!! But I was bothered by the very
thick Chinese accent on both English and Japanese lines.
Geisha are mysterious and have kept the details of their world a secret for a long time. I
think this film is like a little peephole into that world. We are given a
glimpse into this remarkable part of Japanese culture is what drives my
curiosity. I finished reading this novel very fast, because of the fascination
of the story; I was caught in the charm of the story. I cannot describe what a touching book it is. Memoirs
of a Geisha is a Cinderella story. I am touched by
the struggle life of Sayuri got through. Sayuri’s journey to happiness is long,
and her life had undergone many changes the hardships of the Second World War
turned geisha life upside down but luckily she found the true love at the end.
